I Watched My Child
I Watched My Child
By Rita McDermott

I watched my child
utter his first words
take his first steps
begin his first day of school
I watched my child
take his first ride on a bike
play in his first baseball game
find his first best friend
I watched my child
learn to drive a car
graduate from high school
start his first job
I watched my child
diagnosed with cancer
receiving his first chemo treatment
losing his hair and appetite
I watched my child
suffer with pain
tolerate the side effects of treatments
holding on to life
I watched my child
lose the sparkle in his eyes
while his flesh began to wither
when he had no choice
I watched him say goodbye.
