George Knew
George Knew
By Martha Shenton

George knew my favorite month was May—
cherry blossoms, yellow daffodils, life having its way,
emerging from the cold winter past.
Not like April, which sits on the edge,
without certainty of flower or frost.
I think he died in May to cushion my loss.

Martha Shenton graduated with an AB from Wellesley College, an MS from Tufts University, a PHD from Harvard University, in psychology, and a post-doctoral fellowship from Harvard Medical School (HMS). Currently, she is a professor in both psychiatry and radiology at HMS. Her first publication about grief, entitled “Untangling Grief: Living Beyond a Great Loss,” appears in the Harvard Health Blog. “George Knew” is a poem written six months after George’s death. She lives in the Boston area.
