Wintering
Wintering
By Ilma Qureshi
“For among these winters there is one so endlessly winter
that only by wintering through it will your heart survive.”
                                                       -Rainer Maria Rilke

the starless sky
is spreading to spaces
that lie beyond the universe

at the end of the day
it is you
and words
verses
spilling out of flowers

speak to me in roses
she said

but roses let out
only sighs
speak to me in wilderness

snatch me
from my existence
winter through my soul
leave me bare
like autumn trees
ripped off
of leaves
of flowers
of all things that can be lost
