Just before he got sick
we fill the frame of the beach
with our faces
having trouble with the camera
we ask a stranger for help
the pictures turn out funny anyway
if only it were that easy to get help
his face yellowing daily
muscles that have begun to forget.
We are standing under a very tall palm
the hood up on my down jacket
Christmas lights blinking between the fronds
this time it’s a young couple with a toddler
they are more than happy to help
You’ve been friends how long?
they take the camera enthusiastically
the path between babies and twilight
hidden for the moment.
