Only So Many
Only So Many
By Judith Simon Prager
Is it true we are allotted
only so many breaths
between the exalted first
and the dreaded last? How many is “so many?”
Who knows? Who keeps count?
If so, do pearl divers live longer and
marathon runners shorter?

Or is it that we are given only so many heartbeats
or only so many cruel comments
or only so many kisses
–No! That couldn’t be.

Even a universe that
prospers through change
(another word for death)
surely has room for
as many kisses as…
raindrops

Unless they, too, are allotted and
After the rain and the kisses are done,
there will be no more.

And if that is true
they can have my last breath as well
For I would probably in that case
also have spent my last tear.
