Apex of Apnea
Apex of Apnea
By Mary Harwell Sayler

Each time you fail to breathe,
I sell our house and move
into town where neighbors

surround me with an air
of welcome until you beckon
me back with a sudden snort

of inhalation, and I wonder
why your sleep forgot to
dream of vital respiration.
